Montana Mule Deer

It is tough to find better mule deer hunting than that offered by us. There are lots of deer on the leases and trophy quality is outstanding. Harvest success rates are very high, and opportunity for success has always been 100 percent.

We target mule deer at 6- to 8-years of age. Harvested mulies generally average in the mid-160s to mid-170s with 24- to 28-inch spreads average. The areas hunted produce deep forks and decent mass. Most mature bucks have an extra point or two. Bucks over 200 inches have been taken the past with 190s taken most years. Many 180-class mulies are taken each year, as well. We are confident that on a standard hunt, every client should see mule deer bucks in the 150- to 180-class range.

There are not many areas of the country where hunters can pursue mule deer with a rifle during the rut on a 100 percent guarantee license – Montana is one of the few remaining. We pay a little more for licenses for the privilege of hunting the rut, but it is worth every penny. It is no secret that a rutting mule deer is a vulnerable mule deer, even the big old bucks. Couple this vulnerability with sound management practices and the result is great trophy quality and a high harves rate – we offer just that. Mulie bucks can get shot out easily by over hunting during the rut, but that does not happen on our controlled properties.

The Montana season starts the last Sunday in October and runs through the last Sunday in November. The rut hunts are five hunting days. The primary method is to cruise a lot of country by truck or ATV and to do some hiking to investigate certain hard to reach areas.
