Montana Elk

Big Buck Outfitters, Inc. continually searches for elk hunts to offer that have a high harvest rate, good trophy quality, and reasonable license availability -- we have found a couple hunts fitting these criteria. Big Buck Outfitters, Inc. currently offers archery elk in Montana in a couple of different areas and some limited archery and rifle spots in Wyoming. The trophy quality is good to excellent, and it is realistic to hope for a 100 percent opportunity for success on mature bulls -- so realistic that Big Buck Outfitters, Inc. offers $1,000 cash back to any client that does not take a shot at an elk. The Montana elk operation focuses on the area southeast of Billings. We hunt an area of about 20,000 acres with a resident herd of elk. No rifle hunts for bull elk are offered on this private property. The elk have been underhunted for years here, and have the genetics to get big -- one of our clients got to within 80 yards of a 400+ bull on this property in 2003. Hunters should expect to be into elk every day and see 350 class bulls during the hunt. In 2008, a client harvested a 380 class bull that would have made 400" had the sides matched up! We ask that clients let immature bulls pass in favor of harvesting one of the mature bruisers on the property.

The elk in Montana are hunted sometimes from tree stands and Double Bull ground blinds over water holes, wallows and crossings, but the primary method is spot and stalk with calling. During the rut, lots of bugling can be heard on the ranch every day. Availability are limited to 4 to 8 bull elk hunters per year, with standard dates of September 8-13, 15-20, 22-27, and September 29 - October 4.
